The Northumberland Windfarm Public Inquiry
The growth of renewable energy sources has produced a conflict between some windfarm developments and Air Traffic Control. The moving turbines create a pattern of movement which will be detected by Air Traffic Control radars. This in turn can lead to Air Traffic Controllers radar screens being affected by "clutter" which is then a significant factor in their work.
Doug Maclean was the Operational ATC Expert who assed the windfarm applications for Green Rigg, Ray and Steadings. He also presented written and oral evidence to the year long Northumberland Public Inquiry about the potential effect of these windfarms on Air Traffic Control operations.
Doug Maclean has made recent guest lectures at both The University of Glasgow (Business school) and Caledonian University (Transport and Tourism course).
Addressing various themes Doug explained the technical aspects of Air Traffic Control and also how NATS runs Air Traffic Control as safety critical operation - but does so for profit.
